Mama Haiti will be featured, along with The Quiltmaker & Her Granddaughter, at Essex County College Gallery, Newark, New Jersey during the month of March (opening reception March 4, 5-8pm), in the exhibit entitled Sanctuary for the Beloved.

My Grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude James, made her transition from this world in 1989 at the age of 92. I was privileged to have her presence at my birth, and to be by her side in her last moments on this earth. In between, she gave many gifts. Among them: how to help things grow, how to cook, a love of old time gospel hymns, common sense (although not always evident in my behavior) and how to make art from scraps of cloth.
